Furnace hot surface ignitor (HSI) gas furnace starter, glow plug
How to test a furnace hot surface ignitor, HSI. Troubleshooting. See bottom page for trouble shooting help for furnaces, boilers, and hot water heaters.
Do a visual check of the igniter for signs of damage or cracks. The sleeving over the wire should be examined for chafing, burned portions, or cuts in the wire. The connectors should be properly seated and free from oxidation and/or corrosion. Look for hot spots on the igniter. Observe the igniter during heat up. If a bright, white line across one of the igniter legs is detected, a crack may exist that could cause premature failure.

Allow the igniter to cool and perform a resistance test. Addi-tional signs of a crack are an ďopenĒ igniter (shows no continuity when tested), or a buildup of white silica dust around the bright spot. Replace the igniter if you see these cracks.

2. There are several possible causes for repeated igniter failures. One of the causes could be high supply voltage. A hot surface igniter can burn out at approximately 132 V. Even voltages in excess of 125 V may reduce igniter life. If high voltage is present, the power company should be requested to lower the power.

3. Other causes for igniter failure include drywall dust, fiber glass insulation, sealants, or other contaminants that may accumulate on the igniter. In some cases, condensate dripping on the igniter causes it to fail.

4. Furnace or boiler short cycling, delayed ignition, or an overgassed condition also contribute to shortened igniter life.

How to Perform A Resistance Test

One manufacturer (Norton) recommends performing a simple room temperature resistance (RTR) test after installing the igniter. Note: Remember to disconnect the leads to ensure that only the resistance of the igniter is measured.

If the RTR is not to specification for igniter Model 201, which is a 34-sec warm-up time igniter of 45 to 400 ohms, or Model 271, a 17-sec warm-up time igniter of 40 to 75 ohms, then the silicone tip is damaged in some way and should be replaced.

When troubleshooting an appliance where the igniter is suspect, the RTR will be higher on a used igniter, but the resistance should be no more than double the original resistance at installation.

The newer furnaces of today, have had the pilot light  replaced with an electronic ignition system. The
advantage is, that you donít have a pilot light consuming gas 24 hours a day and of course this  saves fuel and lowers your gas bills. When the pilot light in your old furnace blew out, all you had to do was relight the pilot. Trouble shooting ignitor problems are a more difficult.

So, you go to turn up the thermostat to get some heat out of your furnace and nothing happens. Before you even think about the ignitor however, there are some other basic checks you might want to make. First of all, verify that gas is being supplied to the furnace. Next, have some one else turn on the thermostat while you are standing close to it and listen for the characteristic tick, tick, tick clicking sound the ignitor makes. This is, off course, assuming your furnace emits such an audibly detectable noise, some donít or at least any detectable sound may be greatly attenuated by the furnaces insulation. If your furnaceís ignitor usually makes such clicking noises and now they are absent, itís a pretty good bet that there is a problem with the ignitor or other electronic components of the furnace. If you do hear the clicking sound, the ignitor is working and you may just have a bad thermocouple.

The ignitor is an electrical device and therefore requires a power supply, usually a plug circuit that the furnace is plugged into. First check your breaker panel or fuse box to assure that the circuit your furnace is on is working. You can also verify this by unplugging the furnace and plugging something else in to see if it works; assuming that your furnace plugs into a wall outlet and is not hardwired.

The next thing you want to check might be the thermostat which also has a power supply. Most thermostats use 24 volts (V) derived from a transformer. In older furnace models this transformer was usually a discrete component plugged into the same duplex receptacle that the furnace it self was plugged into and included to wires (22 gauge bell wire) which carried the 24 volts to the furnace control unit. Newer furnaces include the 24 volt transformer internally. Either way, there will be two wires leading from the furnace to the thermostat. One of these wires carries 24 volts to the thermostat and if you have a volt meter to test it with, should always read 24V. The thermostat is just a switch, which when closed feeds the 24V coming to it back to the furnace. Thus, when the thermostat is turned up (on) both wires going between the furnace and thermostat should read 24V. If this is the case, you have verified the thermostat is working correctly and narrowed the problem down to the furnace itself and most likely the ignitor circuit.

At this point you need to decide whether you have the mechanical aptitude to go forward with the troubleshooting procedure or want to leave the rest of it to a professional. If you are at all mechanically adept you can probably handle it, and can save a whole lot of money that you will have to fork over to an HVAC pro. If you do want to go ahead on your own, begin by going to the breaker panel or fuse box and turn off the breaker or remove the fuse which feeds power to the furnace unit. This will lessen but not eliminate the possibility of electrical shock to your self and possibly damage to the furnace circuit board, assuming it is still good to begin with.

The furnace electronics circuit board which includes the ignitor circuit, most likely the 24V transformer and perhaps some other electronics, may not be directly accessible without removing an access panel on the furnace. Depending on the furnace, the access panel may be marked to be recognizable, but if not so, you should refer to the operators manual that came with the furnace unit. If you donít have the documents for your furnace unit, jot down the make and model information an Yahoo or Google it on the Internet where you will likely find a down-loadable PDF file with all the information.

Chances are, that unless the HVAC pro you might have called has had some electronics training, he wouldnít know much more about the control circuit board in your furnace than you do by this point, and unless he has some special diagnostic equipment and procedures to trouble shoot the problem further, his next step will be to replace the circuit board. In fact, he probably asked you what brand and model of furnace you have when you called him and has brought along a spare circuit board and some other parts as well. So, to continue you need to get a spare circuit board yourself. Most appliance parts houses will have the board you need in stock, all you have to do is write down the part number of the board and call around to find one. By the way, you want to make sure that the parts house you purchase a new circuit board from will take it back and refund your money if it doesnít fix your problem. Also, it is a good idea that you not attempt to remove the presumably defective circuit board from your furnace until you have the new one in hand.

Okay, so now you are sitting in front of your furnace looking at the new circuit board you have just purchased and comparing it to the one in your furnace unit. Do a good visual inspection of the board in your furnace, making sure that all the connectors are mated securely and that there are no broken wires. Your problem could easily be a loose connection. If you find a loose connection correct the problem and check to see if the furnace works now. If all this looks good, carefully unplug each connector until there are no more wires connected to the circuit board. Most circuit boards are held in place by screws around the edges, but some may use other means of fastening the board to the furnace. Carefully remove the screws or other fasteners and put them in a safe place (a baggy works well). Try not to touch any of the components on the circuit board as a capacitor in an open circuit could issue a substantial electrical shock, and other components on the board itself might be damaged by static electricity.

With the circuit board removed from the furnace, carefully expect it for signs of overheating or burn marks. These are telltale signs of electrical malfunction. Sniffing the board, you may also notice the characteristic older of burned electronic parts. Even so, there may be no physical evidence of damage on the circuit board while it remains defective, and conversely there may be some evidence of overheating even though the circuit board is in working order. The way to find out is to install the replacement circuit board.

Before connecting any plugs or wires to it, install the replacement board in its place in the furnace and reinstall all of the screws or fasteners. Next, carefully reinstall each of the wires and connectors, making sure that all mate snugly and are securely connected to the circuit board. Turn the thermostat to the off position and then switch on the breaker or replace the fuse to resupply power to the furnace. With the power turned back on, now itsí time to turn up the thermostat again.

At this point you have done just about every thing a pro would to get your furnace going again and things should be warming up in your house. The difference between calling a pro and doing it yourself is a couple of hundred dollars for the service call and the 30 percent markup he would charge you on the new ignitor circuit board.
